Jeff Cornett's Report on PrezCon 2003
Jeff Cornett's Report on PrezCon 2003:
First, let me thank Justin for matching me with a roommate at the convention. It was great being able to split the cost of the hotel room, but we got an unexpected benefit -- a third player for our Team Tournament entry. With two of us from Florida and a roommate from Pennsylania, we appropriately named our team The Central Florida Chapter of the Pennsylvania Game Club.
The Team Tournament ended suspensefully. After I defended my PrezCon title in Napoleon and my son "aced" the Mustangs miniatures competition, it came down to a Sunday afternoon finals in Britannia with our roommate, Nicholas Benedict, needing a win for our total to beat Art Field's team. Art and I were killing time, pacing the floor, and delaying our trips home to await the results. On the last turn of the game, Nicholas, withstood 7 die roll attacks to hold out for a 1 point win.
As for the Napoleon event that I served as GM, we had some great competition among a mixture of veterans and newcomers. For those who are interested in the details of how the Napoleon tournament went at PrezCon, follow this link to my GM writeup on this tournament:
http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/rabdwombat/prezcon_2003.htm
The other highlight of our trip from Florida was the Mustangs tournament. Scott goes to PrezCon just for this event -- having played in it 3 straight years. Ed Wagamon, GM's this dogfight with miniature planes mounted on altitude sticks. His knowledge of and enthusiasm for this historical period, combined with his extra effort to award historically accurate campaign medals to the top rated finalists makes him my nomination for GM of the year.
As a final comment, unlike the WBC, only 2 Cornett's qualified for the Medici finals at PrezCon. With my son preferring to play in the Mustangs tournament, and my daughter (the WBC champion) at Law School, it came down to me to defend the family honor (some would say the family ego). One point! One point! I lost it by just one point. 5 of the 6 finalists finished within 7 points. A great finals, but I lost it by just one point! Think of all the ways I could have made that up. One point. I will get over it. No, I won't. One point!

News about Manifest Destiny
Several of you have requested more information about Manifest Destiny, one of the Trial Tournaments at Prezcon. The game was invented by Bill Crenshaw and developed by Ken Gutermuth. It is a card-driven multi-player strategy game for 3-5 players, set in America from colonial times to the present. While it was designed as the successor to Age of Renaissance, Manifest Destiny is significantly simpler, shorter, and more user friendly than AoR. It combines various Euro game elements with a historical based board game. The game incorporates several of the elements of AoR that its fans like, while addressing various criticisms of AoR detractors. It can be enjoyed by gamers of all ages and is available to be pre-ordered online at www.gmtgames.com
The way GMT works is they put games they're interested in publishing on a "Project 500" list at a discounted price (in this case a mere $38 for a game that will retail at $55). Once they hit 500 sales they go into production (and the price goes up). The game had 319 sales as of a few weeks ago, but we expect sales to pick up significantly now that we have a website set up (http://www.geocities.com/aorkg/md/md-home.htm) that has more information. If you go to GMT's website and click on Project 500 and scroll down to Manifest Destiny you can get more info about the game. The game is being actively (and positively) discussed online on ConSimWorld (which also can be accessed from the GMT site).
We are hoping that sales will top the 500 mark sooner rather than later so the initial Manifest Destiny tournament can be run at next year's Prezcon. Please feel free to contact Bill Crenshaw directly at wcrenshaw@starpower.net for more information. Thank you.

As February 2003 comes to a close I find myself wanting to thank all of my fine GM’s and players. They preformed with uncommon skill and ability at PrezCon 2003! With out you running your events PrezCon would not be the success it is today. With over 400 attendees this year we are on our way to becoming a real force in game conventions. It is with this in mind that I have after much thought and discussion with my family, I have decided to run for the Board of Directors of the BPA. If you have been to our con in Charlottesville you know first hand my abilities. I wish to offer those who come to the WBC a option in a board member who understands what it takes to make there gaming experience enjoyable. After 10 years I have the skills needed to help the board in many positions. PrezCon is now the second largest board game convention on the east coast. The BPA has no members of our board on it board. It is time to change that. I ask for you to send this out to all your friends that are members of the BPA and I ask you for your support. It won’t be easy getting me on the board. Andy Lewis is for sure running and Don Greenwood will most likely run as well. I am not saying that I am better than anybody who is running for the board. I am saying that after 10 years of running a successful con experience does counts. I want to put my experience to work for you. Once again THANK YOU for your time at PrezCon as a GM or Player.

Keith Levy's Report on the Con!
I had an especially good time this year, as I was somewhat more relaxed then in previous years.
The people are what make Prezcon so great. The gamers are wonderful. Everyone seems to know each other. I was smiling from ear to ear the entire convention. I was in my element surrounded by my gaming family. I donned my purple gaming hat and Maryland tie, which always helps spreads the fun. I love spreading the fun and sharing such a wonderful hobby. Thanks to Justin, Scott and all the GMs for doing such a wonderful job!
Some of my activities
GM 4 heats of Risk – I was disappointed with the low attendance of only 13 different players.
Randy Dean won the tournament. After running this event for eight years at Prezcon, I have
grown tired of the time commitment. I made a decision to not run Risk at next year’s Prezcon. Coincidently
Randy Dean volunteered to take it over next year prior to winning the tournament.
Axis And Allies-played two heats, made some miserable mistakes and I did not play well. But I did have fun.
Call My Bluff-I did two demo games.
Carcassone- Came in a close second.
Lost Cites- Got my butt whipped by Eric Hymowitz.
Medici-A great game that I don’t get to play enough of. I came in second place in one heat.
Puerto Rico-I enjoyed the game and came in a close second place.
Risk-I played two games as a eliminator.
Ra- I actually won for the first time in tournament play and advanced to the semi final.
I tied with the first place player in points in points but they advanced to the final due to a higher sun value.
Risk 2210- Scheduled demo that attracted no interest due to poor scheduling.
Risk-Lord of the Rings. Did three unscheduled demos. This attracted a lot of interest for not even being on the schedule. I plan to run a tournament next year.
Titan- Got eliminated early by Steve Kolazar
Union Pacific-I came in third place. The first time I played a game in which three payouts occured one right after the other. The game took about 30 minutes including clean up.
Crowning Achievement [although I was not wearing my hat at the time : ) ]. I was inducted into the Prezcon Hall of Fame for 2003 in the GM category. Thanks to everyone who has helped support my efforts.
I look foward to seeing more GCOM members in attendance next year.
Thanks, Keith

Here are a few posts from Consim on how the con went!

"... I seem to be running a Bullshit farm here." - Richard H. Berg
Justin, My thanks again for another well run convention. I'm certainly looking forward to next year already.
Peter Stein, I saw a game of Kremlin being played, but you weren't there, so I assumed it was the finals! (ouch!) ;-) Was great to see you again!
The neatest aspect of the con for me this year was in open gaming. Don't get me wrong, tournament gaming is great, but it's in open gaming that I learn new (to me) games and play the off the beaten path games.
As some of you who read this board might already know, it's a tradition for Roger Taylor and I to break out "Rette Sich Wer Kann" ("Every man for himself" - transliterated) aka the "Lifeboat Game". Well, this year, Roger and I had to break out BOTH of our copies as we fielded two games of 5 players each (max is 6 players per game). Special thanks to Mark Guttag for stepping up to become the 10th gamer to round out the field! Everyone seemed to have a good time with this game. Of course it helped that the bunch of guys that played were the type that can be very cut throat, and not take it personally.
We did get a bunch of players to play the other "Lifeboat" game aka "Shipwreck" from Fat Messiah games, one night. That was a rather interesting experience. We quickly realized that it might not be a good idea to talk about that game without the game sitting right in front of you, and even then in hushed tones! "But I couldn't help you because I loved Sir Stephen, I don't care if you loved me!". :-)
Tournaments: Well, I finished 2nd in Zero, with Mike Nagel beating the snot out of me! We had a close first dogfight with him winning by only two points, but I had what I felt was the better element. I knew I was in trouble on the second dogfight having to switch sides, and sure enough ... Thanks to Rich Phares for GMing that one, and for the inter tournament open gamining sessions, where we'd sit back, play a leisurly game of whatever was on hand, and shoot the bull. Good time.
Made the finals of McGartlin Motor Sports. I was second to last going into the pits after 100 laps (out of 200), but was fourth coming out due to being able to play the "Fast Pit" card. Unfortunately, I got nailed on the second lap card after the pitstop with an overheated engine and was the first to exit the race, finishing last. Still, it was a lot of fun. I wish I could get my hands on a copy of that game. Thanks to Jon Zug for GMing. Jon is a great GM in my book. He's got the perfect balance between running a fun game, and a tight ship. You can crack wise during one of Jon's games, but you best be paying attention because his game WILL finish in it's alotted time, if not sooner! Always a plus when trying to plan your next event! Great job Jon!
HeroClix. Yes I actually played this. I was surprised by how much fun I had doing it too! I joined because my roomate (who GM'd the event) needed me to round out a field. My first opponent wanted to play a team of X-Men. So I got his okay to take out the big Sentinal that they created for the game (I had to use roomies copy), and we went head to head. I won that one, just barely. My semi final opponent finished off my sentinal with a team of mixed heroes and villians rather easily, so it was a fourth place finish. If it weren't another "collectable crack" game, I could get into this one! I may, anyway. Thanks to Steve Quade (aka "Smiley Guy" or "roomie" or "unmentionable") :-) and especially to my semi final opponent who's name escapes me right now, who helped me to learn some pretty interesting strategies (while kicking my tail) for this one.
I GM'd the Bohnanza card game on Saturday. I was hoping to lure some folks that didn't make other finals. If you only know this game as "That silly bean game" I implore you to try it. It's actually pretty good IMHO. Wound up with 8 players, so we broke down into two groups of four and then I took the top two at each table and the best scorer from the two games that finished third, for a five player final. Sure enough, that fifth player wound up winning the final! Congrats Kevin Brown!
Again, a great time, glad to see all the faces I knew, and meet some new faces that I didn't know (for instance I put a face with the name "Mark Guttag" this go round). Definitely some faces that I still haven't associated with a name, but I noticed the difference between how many folks I know now (or now know), as opposed to my first PrezCon five (or so) years ago, and it was a nice realization that I met almost every one of those people at a PrezCon along the way.
Alan P. Murphy - 10:38am Feb 24, 2003 PST (#242 of 252)
Trying to dig out of 2' of snow in time to make PREZCON by this weekend!
Justin,
Hats off on a wonderful convention. I had a great time on Saturday, having struggled, er, played Streets of Stalingrad for essentially the entire time there. While not many attended the monstergame side of the convention, from what I could see, everybody seemed to be having great fun.
My only regrets is not seeing more actual wargames, as opposed to euros, etc., but this is an all-too familiar trait I've noticed with the WBC as well. I understand the popularity of the card-driven games, but dog-gone it, my own interests lean towards those wargames with hexes, big maps, and lots of counters (...actually, SoS was just a little bit TOO much...The campaign game is simply too big for only two players - it really needs more like three, per side!).
I was hoping to sit in on a little Ukraine '43, but the event already had transpired by the time we had arrived on Sat. morning.
The auction was also quite interesting. I couldn't believe how many bargains were to be had, many for under $10.00 - incredible!
All said and done; I had a great time and plan to attend again for 2004.

Jeff Bakalchuck - 12:55pm Feb 24, 2003 PST (#243 of 252)
If you think what I say is crazy, just remember my Team is "Straight from Bellevue"
Prezcon was a wonderful event, and a big thank you to Justin, Scott and Kaarin for running a terrific event.
I don't think I played in as many events as Tom, as I did a good amount of open gaming.
I managed 2 2nd place plaques and 1 first place plaque, which I must say the full color ones are quite nice indeed, however the big highlight of the event for me was seeing Jason Carr.
It was so wonderful to see Jason compete in many events and be treated as just another gamer. Despite his phyiscal disability, he was treated no differently than any other gamer. People played their same game, there were no condescending attitudes, people didn't avoid hurting him position in games. People were very willing to assist him to overcome any dexterity issues(such as dice rolling). He always had a smile on his face(especially in Formula motor racing when he took his dad's car out of the race with a spin out). I felt proud to be associated with the gamers at Prezcon.
Some additional memorable moments.
1) Watching Tom finish 1-2 in the first race of formula motor racing, then play the crash card on the first play of race 2, roll a 1 , and crash both his cars and still win the heat :) That and a world class pit crew in the finals(he went 9 for 9 on event card roles) gave him a well earned 2nd place in Formula Motor Racing, just edging out yours truly, who finished 3rd.
2) Slapshot was tie city. Played the opening round with Kaarin, chuck endicott, and Lee Presser. I think we had about 35 tie games as nobody could seems to finish anyone off. In the second round, Kaarin managed to win 9 games, but her team was so battered, she ended up with 4 1's and had no chance of winning a playoff game.
3) I managed to take 2nd place in Pro Golf, losing out to Justin "The Golden Bear" Thompson. Clearly his superior skill showed in this game. I now see I need to work on my 2nd shots to have any chance to beat him. Most amusing part of that game, was Bruce Rieff calling me over to his table to explain things to a newbie who was considering a layup and not going for the green.
4) Winning Manifest Destiny, beating Charlie Hicock on the final turn, by 70 dollars. As Charlie edged me out at the last WBC in Merchant of Venus by one turn, I consider our slate even ;)
Editor's note: Manifest Destiny is a GREAT GREAT game, go to gmt's website and pre-order it from the P500 list.
Note to Bill Crenshaw: I ordered a 2nd copy for my mom. Not that they play much board gaming down in Boynton Beach, FL, but her son did win the event, and she'll want a copy ;)

Just returned from Prezcon, had a great time on Saturday playing Europe Engulfed (we fought the entire war in about 11 hours), and then clinched wood on Sunday, barely overcoming strong play by George Seary to claim 1st place for Hammer of the Scots.
A great convention, put on by a staff that truly cares about both the hobby and its players, all in a wonderful Hotel.
Can't wait 'till next year!

I guess that whole theme dress-up thing is outside the realm of our Gamer skillsets.

Arthur Field - 07:42pm Feb 23, 2003 PST (#237 of 252)
Just returned after having 3 flights canceled and having to get a van from Charlotte to Greenville.
Had a wonderful time for the most part. (4.5 days with Michelle is too much for any human being.) It was great seeing the entire Columbus crowd, even that bstrd Sauer. (Enjoy the itty bitty plaque while you can George.)
I played from 5 PM Wed straight thru until 2 PM today. Played in almost every Euro game. Got a 3rd in El Grande, 1st in Princes of Florence, 2nd in Tikal, 3rd in Ra, 1st in Mexica, 4th in Puerto Rico (yes, Bruce, I know you beat me), 3rd in Carc: H & G, 3rd in Auction, played in the semis of Settlers, played 2 rounds of Titan the Arena, one of Medici, and won the Ironman Euro Track with at least 18 points. I also got to play in a round of Atlantic Storm and one of Carcassone. (The only problem with the separate tracks is it prevents you from playing outside the track if you have any real desire to win the award.) I would have like to play in Union Pacific, Acquire, AOR, and more Medici, but just couldn't fit them into the schedule. There just wasn't enough time.
Never went to bed before 2 and got up by 7:30 every morning. Great job done by Justin and Scott. Hard to believe things ran as smoothly as they did with so many games and new players.
Really wonderful to see Jack Jaeger, Nick Smith, Jeff Mullet, George S., Bruce, Sean, Ken G., Debbie G., Kaarin En., John C., Chris Terrell, Paul W., and all the many other people with whom I gamed.
Regardless of what anyone may think, I come because of the camaraderie, not the plaques, which, as Bruce will tell you, simply don't count. Given how many he has, he should know.
Congratulations to the Cornetts and Nick Benedict, who beat Jack Jaeger, Nick Smith and me out for the team tournament winner by 1 point (10 to 9). If Benedict had only lost a single die roll in the last round of Brittania, we would have had it.
My only criticism with the tournament was the few finals I played in that had average players. There seemed to be one wild card in about half the final games. That produced strange results, like letting that guy Jaeger beat me by 1 point in Tikal. But, I'll get him next year....
Hope everyone else made it home ok. Can't wait to do it again. I know I will be in post tournament letdown tomorrow.
Once more, thanks Scott.

Tom McCorry - 05:53am Feb 24, 2003 PST (#238 of 252)
I just finished compiling my statistics for another great PrezCon tournament. By my count:
I played 16 different games 37 times against 71 different gamers. I made it into 3 finals (Princes of Florence, Evo, and Formula Motor Racing) and took home two plaques (Kremlin - 1st and FMR - 2nd). The amazing number was the 40 hours and 55 minutes of actual gaming time over the 4 days.
My most memorable moments:
-Princes of Florence final – Playing against the elite gamers Arthur Field, Bruce Reiff, David Platnick, and Nick Smith in one of the best POF games I’ve seen was incredible.
-Formula Motor Racing heat – I finished the first of two races in first and second place. My first play of the next round was a crash and I managed to roll a ‘1’ and crash both of my cars. Still managed to keep the rest of the field at bay with the dummy cards to move on to the final.
- Watching my wife and daughter take home wood in Lost Cities (2nd) and Air Baron (3rd) respectively.
- The late night Puerto Rico games with Nick Smith and Kevin Walsh.
- Getting enough money from the auction to pay for my new purchases, especially at the GMT booth with their very nice convention discount.
PrezCon truly has become the winter equivalent of the WBC. Anyone who enjoys great gaming, a wonderful hotel at a very reasonable price, and a friendly atmosphere needs to put PrezCon on their gaming calendar. Justin and Scott did a very professional job handling all the usual headaches of a convention and still managed to get some gaming in at the same time. Kudos to both of them.

PrezCon in the Snow
The 10th anniversary of PrezCon is going on as scheduled. The very first PrezCon had snow & ice, so now it’s a tradition. The weather report looks great from the rest of the week w/ the temperature rising into the low 50s by Saturday. The main roads around the hotel are in good shape and getting better all the time, so getting in and out shouldn’t be a problem. I look forward to see each and everyone of you this week. Have a safe trip and I’ll start seeing you tomorrow.
